My initial association with 3D printing was that it was a creative activity instead of a business concept. Personal projects of it appeared interesting, but not something that would result in financial independence. But, when I read the article of Saulius Meilutis, “How to Start a 3D Printing Business from Home Profitably,” I started to think about how 3D printing can assist people to become entrepreneurs with a low start-up cost. Simultaneously, I also found out other sources where the financial, technical, and legal issues that small innovators come across frequently were being discussed. This contradictory thinking demonstrated to me that 3D printing is an opportunity as well as a threat. Although 3D printing is still developing, it offers an accessible way to start a home-based business because the equipment is affordable, the learning curve is manageable, and the profit margins can be high.
